Write Evaluations, Not Proposals — And Charge For Them
A few years back, we decided to try something new. A potential client approached us and rather than preparing another project proposal, we offered the client what we now call a “Project Evaluation.” We charged them a fixed price for which we promised to evaluate the project, in all of our areas of expertise, and give them our recommendations.

I’ve championed the belief that ultimately it’s not how you feel about a design or experience but how the design makes you feel about yourself, in large part because influencing how one feels after adopting a product is an essential component of the advocacy process.

Tell a captivating story: Next time you hear a presenter say "I'll begin by telling you a story..." watch the audience - you'll see them relax into their chairs. They are re-entering the pleasant "storytime trance" they knew and loved as kids. Their critical guard is down, and the speaker has a golden opportunity to engage them emotionally, by telling a powerful story that is relevant to her theme.

Branding appeals to our emotions and our reason. Stories speak to our deepest questions about our own existence. Stories stick because they hold real value. By definition, they entertain, but they also educate, and even instill moral values. (^FastDesignCo.)

What does seem to work is more traditional online marketing, including email and search advertising. Most consumers in the study were exposed to some form of marketing by the retailers before they made their purchase. Seventy seven percent of transactions in hard goods categories (like lawnmowers) and 82% in soft goods categories (i.e. clothing) occurred after the consumers had engaged in some interactive marketing tactic before their purchase. Forty percent of hard goods transactions and 60% of soft goods transactions came to retail websites directly from email and search.

If Timberland, which did everything from LEED-certifying its stores to purchasing large amounts of renewable energy, couldn't meet its goal, how can any other consumer goods company do it? Cut down on those plane flights. Pick up the phone! Take a train! One really simple solution: Be a local businesses.

When the founder understands the needs of the target market inherently, they see potential innovations that are hidden to the less attuned. Steve Jobs isn’t just a great businessman, he’s also the prototypical Apple user, and he’s assembled a team of smart, like-minded folks to bring his vision to life. It’s no wonder Apple doesn’t ask users what they want. They are the users.
